要租房子，租金多少是需要考慮的一個重要因素，此外，還要弄清楚水電煤氣、取暖物業等各種費用。
　　1. What’s the rent on that? How much is the deposit?
　　租金是多少？押金又是多少？
　　Rent 這個詞除了當動詞"出租"外，也可當名詞"租金"解釋。所以當你想詢間對方"租金是多少"時，可以說："How much is the rent?" 或是 "How much is it per month?" (每個月多少錢啊？) 當然除了 rent 之外，租房子之前通常要另外付一筆押金 (security deposit 或 cleaning deposit)，當你搬走時如果被招租人 (leaser) 發現有什么家具被房客 (tenant， lessee) 用壞時，他們就可以從這筆 deposit 當中扣除。美國有些地方法律規定，如果房東持有押金"超過"一年，應付房客利息，要是在中國也這樣就好了。
　　2. What utilities am I responsible for?
　　我要負擔哪些公共設施？
　　Utilities 泛指一般的公共設施及水電瓦斯，一般租房子是不包括 utilities費用的，所以租房子時免不了要先問，"Are utilities included?" (有包含水電嗎？) 或是 "What utilities am I responsible for?" (我要負擔什么樣的公共設施？) 在美國，每個地方的規定都不同，例如有些地方水是免費但電要自己付擔，還有些地方是法律規定房東冬天一定要供應暖氣，但費用是由誰負擔則不妨先弄清楚。在中國則通常是水電氣都要自己支付，但取暖費 (heating fee) 和物業費（property management fee）就不一定。
　　此外不一定包含在 utilities 的民生必需品則是 cable TV service (有線電視，老美常簡稱 cable)， phone 和 internet connection service (上網服務)。這些在租房子前也不妨先問清楚，"I also need cable， what number do you think I should call?" (我還需要有線電視，你想我該打電話找誰？)
