Four years ago, Mr. Green started Project Impact. This is a non-profit group that works to develop and produce medical technologies in several countries around the world.

Over the years, David Green also launched a project to sell high-quality hearing aids at a low price. Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the reality or do you appear through smoke and mirrors ? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well.

I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(儲蓄)into your PBA and will build strength for your future.

68.The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “”.

  A. to be honest

  B. to be unreal

  C. to become clear

  D. to come from an imagined world

  69. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?

  A. Be your true self rather than follow others.

  B. Copy others or you can’t be the first class.

  C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.

  D. Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.

  70. What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?

  A. Honesty can be of great help.

  B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.

  C. Helping others cheat can do good to others sometimes.

  D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.

  71. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express .

  A. one must be brave to be honest

  B. it’s difficult to be honest when others are not

  C. one should be honest when making a deposit

  D. honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future

Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word radiation.

Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.

At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being totally by killing masses of cells in vital organs. Even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This isthe case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.

This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(照射)and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or liable (易于)to serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.

Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.

  72. According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in ________.

  A. nuclear mystery B. radiation detection C. nuclear radiation D. radiation level

  73. The underlined word “deformed” in Paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with “_________”.

  A. unnatural B. normal C. usual D. proper

  74. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. We can’t detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.

  B. Only radiation at very high levels can damage an animal or human being.

  C. If all cells are damaged healthy cells will take the place of them.

  D. Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.

  75. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?

  A. Discussing the cause of cancer.

  B. Solving the mystery about radiation.

  C. Emphasizing the importance of protection against radiation.

  D. Introducing the nuclear power.

Pieter Hoff used to export lilies and tulips from the Netherlands. He retired from the flower export business seven years ago. Now, he is trying to help people grow trees and plants in the desert -- and save water. In many places, much of the freshwater supply is used for irrigation. Yet most of that water may be lost through evaporation into the air. So Pieter Hoff has invented a simple plastic device called the Groasis Waterboxx. He says he got the idea from nature.

Mr. Hoff says the trick is that nature does not dig a hole like we humans do to plant seeds. Nature plants the seeds through birds or animals on top of the soil. Their waste then acts as a cover. It prevents the humidity in the soil from evaporating.

The Dutch inventor says he is simply copying that system. The Waterboxx is a round device about the size of a motorcycle tire. It sits flat on the ground with the bottom open to the earth. Seeds or a young planting grow out of a hole in the center.

Some people call the Waterboxx a water battery because of its ability to collect and store water.

The cover has deep ridges. These collect rainwater. But the device is designed to collect water even when there is no rain. The cover gets cold during the night and creates condensation.

The water is collected through two holes and in the holes there is a siphon to carry it to the soil. Pieter Hoff says the nice thing about the siphons is that, once collected, the water is not able to evaporate anymore.

The roots of the plant may have to grow several meters deep to reach groundwater. Once growth is established, the box can be removed and used to start another planting. The company also makes a version for one-time use.

Researchers at Mohammed the First University in Oujda, Morocco, tested the Waterboxx for three years in the Sahara. They said close to ninety percent of the trees planted with the device survived. Without it, they said, only about ten percent survived.

Groasis Waterboxx---a device to help plant trees in ____76_____

  How was it invented?

The inventor got inspiration(靈感) from ___77____.

  What does it look like?

A round device as ___78___ as a motorcycle tire. It can be put ___79___on the ground with a hole at the ___80____.

  How does it work?

Water can be ___81____ and ___82____ through the device. A siphon is used to carry the water to the ___83____. The device can be __84____ away when the plant grows deep enough to get groundwater. and some can only be used for ___85____.
