　　"A long time ago people were ashamed," she said, "I can remember when I went into surgery, there were so many young doctors there to watch the operation." The doctors told her that she was cut so terribly that she was in the hospital for six weeks.

　　“那時候的人還挺害羞的，”她說道，“我很清楚地記得我動手術(shù)時，有很多年輕的醫(yī)生在觀察手術(shù)過程。”醫(yī)生告訴她，她的乳房切除的很徹底，得住院六個星期。

　　After she had the surgery, there were no follow-up treatments, only a few x-rays. "I didn't heal for eight months and I finally had to go to New Orleans. I could not do anything with my arm. I had it strapped down to my side but it didn't bother me," she says. Emma would not believe the doctors when they told her she would not be able to use her arm again, so she began to exercise the arm herself.

　　手術(shù)結(jié)束后，沒有進(jìn)行后續(xù)治療，只是例行做了X光檢查。她說：“八個月后，我還有沒有痊愈，就不得不去新奧爾良。我的手臂什么事情都做不了。只得用繃帶把它掛在一邊，但這難不倒我。”艾瑪不相信醫(yī)生所說的，她的胳膊再也不能使用，她開始自己鍛煉使用手臂。

　　Her husband helped her to raise her arm every day and she eventually regained use of it. After Emma had the first cancer, another cancer was found in her remaining breast, and she had to have a second mastectomy. So then she had to go through all the fears of cancer again. Some years later her husband died and she was left to raise their sons all alone. Emma has done a little bit of everything from working in the fields, helping run the dairy farm that they owned and finally teaching 4th grade for 40 years. Cancer never got in her way. "I know science will find a cure someday." she has said.

　　The best part of the story for Emma was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 33 in 1928 and today in 2001; Emma is 106 years of age and a 73-year Breast Cancer Survivor.

　　Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always stressed to me, "You should have objectives and capacity like the mountain."

　　每當(dāng)太陽快要下山，蔚藍(lán)的天空浮現(xiàn)出來時，我和我的父親總會去攀登我家附近的那座大山。我們一邊攀登一邊聊起很多話題。父親的經(jīng)驗(yàn)之談讓我受益匪淺。他總是鼓勵我：“你要有山一般堅定的目標(biāo)和寬闊的胸懷。”

　　This has largely influenced my life. Without such mountaineering opportunities, we couldn't have had enough time to spend together because my father was very busy himself. I believe mountaineering is really beneficial. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep contemplation as well as develop my patience. I loved traversing the top of the mountains, getting away from the routine of city life, the noise and the pollution, and being able to breathe fresh air.

　　One time we climbed Palgoly Mountain, one of the highest mountains in Korea. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the fresh air, the birds singing, and the beautiful dances of butterflies; but as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. At that moment, I wanted to quit climbing.

　　一次我們爬Palgoly山——韓國的最高峰之一。對我來說，那簡直是一個巨大的挑戰(zhàn)，因?yàn)槟菚r我只有10歲。開始的幾個小時，我還享受著空氣的清新，聆聽鳥兒的歡叫，欣賞蝴蝶的翩翩起舞。但慢慢地，我的雙腿酸疼起來。就在那時，我想要放棄。

　　Actually, I hated it at that moment, but my father said to me, "Spring is a season when everything comes to life again. The mountain and field where we are standing are embroidered with flowers and trees. You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can't see it before you reach the top. You can always enjoy the scenes of many waterfalls, temples and countless peaks and valleys at the top of the mountain, but you can't see it when you are halfway up. Only there at the top, can you embrace all of those things, just like in life."

　　事實(shí)上，當(dāng)時我恨透了爬山。但父親對我說：“春天是萬物復(fù)蘇的季節(jié)。此刻，山巒和田野被樹木和鮮花裝扮。你總能在峰頂看到美麗的天空，但在抵達(dá)峰頂前，你是看不到的。在山頂你也能欣賞到很多瀑布、寺廟、無數(shù)山峰和峽谷的美景，但這一切在半山腰卻看不到。只有在山頂，你才有幸福飽覽這一切。生活也是這樣。”

　　At that time, I was too young to understand his thoughts, but after that, I got new hope and confidence. Finally, I found myself standing at the top of the mountain. And there, I could see the whole of the sky, which was as clear as crystal.

　　那時，我還小，無法理解他的話，但這些話卻使我充滿了希望和信心，最終爬到了峰頂。放眼過去，整個天空如水晶般澄澈。
