　　盡管美國幅員遼闊，而且土地所產出的糧食遠遠超過現有人口的需求，現今的美國卻幾乎完全是個都市化的國家。不足十分之一的人口在從事農業和林業，而剩余的大多數人都居住在大大小小的城鎮中或者城鎮的周圍。傳統的景象在這里不斷發生著變化：小的城鎮之間仍然彼此十分相似，典型的小城鎮還是呈現出大家心目中的鄉村的風貌;但是大部分的美國人卻不再住在小城鎮了。現在半數的人口都在大約30幾個大都市地區(包括附近郊區的大型城市)——這種大都市地區的人口都在百萬以上，總的都市人口數量遠遠超過德國和英國，更不用說法國了。城市和鄉村的人口統計需要特別對待，因為我們所謂的住在鄉村的人們，每天都會開車前往附近的城鎮工作。當遠離城鎮居住的熱潮持續的情況下，城鎮周圍的鄉村地區逐漸蓋滿了房屋。那么說不定什么時候，一塊鄉村的地區就變成了城市的郊區。不過，典型的美國人還是越來越趨向于居住在大都市而不是小城鎮的環境中。
