The Language of Music
A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed.Professional singers and players have greatresponsibilities, for the composer is utterlydependent on them. A student of music needs aslong and as arduous a training to become aperformer as a medical student needs to become adoctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscularproficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as theirvocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String playerspractice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and frowith the right arm—two entirely different movements.
Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists arespared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is thepiano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their owndifficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.
This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they haveto learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim atcontrolling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.
Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding.Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they canenjoy performing works written in any century.

Computer Games on Campus
Today, many college students are absorbed in playing computer games. Maybe there is some truth in the statement that computer games are fun and will train one's reactivity, determination and attention.
However, the merits of computer games can never compensate for the negative effects they have. First, it is very time-consuming to play computer games. The game fans have sacrificed almost all their time, thus they have no time to attend class, to take exercises, or even to date. Upon graduation many will regret that they have wasted the precious college time on nothing. Second, the game fans, who spend their time before the lifeless computers, usually overlook their relationship with others. They would find that they have some mental or psychic problems.
In my opinion, I don’t think we can benefit a lot from playing computer games. Study should always be given the first priority. Concerning the negative effects listed above, I do hope those game fans can step away from computer games.

Credit Cards on Campus
In recent years, credit cards have gained more popularity among college students. With banks’ more focus on college market, an increasing number of college students have applied for credit cards and begun to consume by them.
The following three factors can account for the popularity of credit cards on campus. Firstly, a credit card provides overdrawing service, which is a big attraction for those students who have not much money for their domination. Secondly, a credit card can help release financial burdens on those poor students, and hence reduce the risk of their dropping school for lacking money. Besides, many banks make some preferential policies on credit cards, like sending a gift, lowering year cost. Drawn by these policies, many college students have applied for credit cards.
As far as I am concerned, it is not a bad thing for college students to own credit cards. However, there is misuse of credit cards among college students. Many students use credit cards to buy luxurious things they don’t need really, and even some of them owe a big credit card debt. Therefore, schools and banks have responsibility to let college students learn how to use credit cards properly. Only in this way can college students enjoy really the advantages of credit cards.
